Newtown Middle Eastern Dance Centre
The Newtown Middle Eastern Dance Centre (NMEDC) has been offering belly dance classes for twenty years. Whether you just want to have fun and improve your fitness, or seriously pursue the dance, we have a class to suit you!
Other classes are $20.00 per one-hour class unless otherwise noted. Annual, 6 months and monthly memberships are available, entitling you to unlimited classes plus discounts on workshops and events.
NMEDC offers performance opportunities for senior students and successful graduates. See also: The Fabulous Turkish Delights. We also produce an annual bellydance pantomime which has a four-show theatre season in December each year. It is lots of fun and hard work and you are welcome to join us! Contact us to find out how to get involved.
Leonie, school principal, teaches most classes. See About Leonie for biographical and teaching information.
Ruth has been teaching beginners and intermediate classes at NMEDC for more than ten years. Ruth is a professional dancer who works at various venues around Sydney. She brings a background in classical ballet to her classes which emphasise technique through a syllabus of drills that she has devised to develop strength, control, flexibility and isolation. Ruth creates and choreographs our bellydance pantos - 'NOT the Nutcracker Suite' (2007), 'NOT Cinderella' (2008), 'NOT Little Red Riding Hood' (2009), NOT Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs (2010), NOT The Wizard of Oz (2011), Peta (NOT Peter) Pan (2012) and The Magic Lamp (NOT Aladdin) in 2013. She designs the school, Festival and Bellydance Pantomime websites and is Festival archivist.
